Study Title
What effect did COVID-19 have on the blood inventories of local hospitals?
Study Description
The aim of the study is to 1) describe Red Blood Cell and Platelet inventory 2) assess the value of deviation from par and days on hand as predictors of inventory management problems (shortage, surplus and waste) during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to a non-pandemic baseline period in a sample of hospital transfusion services. Data will be collected on Wednesdays to reflect “routine” weekday hospital activity. The study period will include a ~6 month period surrounding the local peak incidence of COVID-19 and the corresponding time frame in 2019 as the baseline. Data collected will include: demographic information, established par levels, hospital activity indicators, inventory, utilization, and outdate. The study outcomes will be to 1) describe the inventory pandemic vs. non-pandemic times 2) assess if deviation from par and days on hand are able to predict shortage, surplus, and waste.
