Study Title
Glucose measurement in platelets in additive solution
Study Description
The 21st Edition of the Council of Europe (EDQM) guidelines stipulates that glucose measurement at expiry should replace pH testing for platelet components stored in additive solution. Further these guidelines state that glucose should be above the lower limit of detection of a validated assay at expiry. This is problematic as many blood centres do not currently have the capacity to measure glucose, and there is variability in the detection limits of existing assays. As such, a survey will be developed in order to understand how blood centres currently perform glucose measurement in routine QC testing or in their research laboratories. The survey will include a request for glucose measurement and other platelet quality, function and manufacturing data, such that a more informative assay for determining platelet quality at expiry may possibly be identified.
